Mechanical Aspects of Cardiac Performance

Monitoring of hemodynamic and mechanical parameters of the heart are reviewed. Clinical methodologies are discussed along with tools used in a research setting. Specifically, these include: arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, mixed venous oxygen saturation, cardiac output, pressure–volume loops, flow monitoring, and Frank–Starling curves. These parameter...

Use of peripherally inserted central catheters as an alternative to central catheters in neurocritical care units.

BACKGROUND Patients in neurological critical care units often have lengthy stays that require extended vascular access and invasive hemodynamic monitoring. The traditional approach for these patients has relied heavily on central venous and pulmonary artery catheters. The aim of this study was to evaluate peripherally inserted central catheters as an alternative to central venous catheters in n...

Determination of Central Venous Pressure from Intraocular Pressure

Background: In many clinical situations, knowledge of central venous pressure (CVP) is important.  Measurement of CVP is not always possible. Objective: To determine if intraocular pressure (IOP) can be used as an estimate for CVP. Methods: IOP and CVP were measured concurrently in 30 candidates of coronary artery bypass graft surgery.  Those with carotid artery or jugular venous diseases as we...

Pulmonary artery occlusion pressure and central venous pressure fail to predict ventricular filling volume, cardiac performance, or the response to volume infusion in normal subjects.

OBJECTIVE Pulmonary artery occlusion pressure and central venous pressure have been considered to be reliable measures of left and right ventricular preload in patients requiring invasive hemodynamic monitoring. Studies in recent years have questioned the correlation between these estimates of ventricular filling pressures and ventricular end-diastolic volumes/cardiac performance variables in s...

Use of Ultrasound to Assess Fluid Responsiveness in the Intensive Care Unit

Determining the appropriate amount of fluid resuscitation to administer to a critically ill patient is a complex decision. Traditional tools for the assessment of preload sensitivity such as central venous pressure (CVP) and pulmonary artery occlusion pressure (PAOP) are inaccurate in predicting whether a patient requires volume resuscitation [1]. Diagnostic ultrasonography in the form of echoc...
